SRINAGAR, JAMMU AND KASHMIR-24 JUNE 2026: Thousands of Shia mourners participated in the 8th Muharram procession in Indian-administered Kashmir, marking one of the region's most important religious events. The procession commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, and the sacrifices made during the Battle of Karbala. Participants marched through the streets carrying religious banners and reciting elegies in remembrance of the tragedy. The event, which returned after years of restrictions linked to the insurgency that began in the 1990s, reflects the enduring significance of faith, collective memory, and community identity in Kashmir.
