Storyline
Hong Kong, May 30, 2025 (Nexpher) - Four Hong Kong pro-democracy activists, including prominent Pro-democracy activist and LGBTQ campaigner Jimmy Sham, were released from prison on Friday after serving more than four years behind bars in a landmark subversion case under the Beijing-imposed national security law. The group was among 47 opposition figures charged with conspiracy to commit subversion for participating in an unofficial primary election in 2020 aimed at securing a majority in the city’s legislature. Their trial has been widely viewed as a key test of political freedoms in the financial hub. Sham, a longtime activist and former convenor of the now-disbanded Civil Human Rights Front (CHRF), played a central role in organizing large-scale, peaceful protests during the 2019 pro-democracy movement. He has also been a prominent voice for LGBTQ rights in Hong Kong. The national security law, imposed by Beijing in 2020, criminalizes acts of secession, subversion, terrorism, and collusion with foreign forces. Critics say the law has effectively silenced dissent and dismantled democratic institutions in the former British colony.
