Storyline
Hong Kong, May 31, 2025 (Nexpher) - The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Tuen Ng Festival in Hong Kong, is a traditional Chinese holiday that falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month—usually in May or June. The festival commemorates the death of Qu Yuan, a revered poet and minister of the ancient state of Chu, who drowned himself in protest against government corruption over 2,000 years ago. According to legend, villagers raced out in boats to save him or retrieve his body, beating drums and throwing rice dumplings (zongzi) into the river to ward off evil spirits and fish. Today, the festival is celebrated with vibrant dragon boat races, where teams paddle ornately decorated boats to the rhythm of pounding drums. It’s one of the most colorful and culturally significant events in the Chinese calendar, drawing both local and international participants. In Hong Kong, races are held in various districts, including Stanley, Aberdeen, and Sai Kung, transforming the waterfronts into festive gathering points for spectators.
